RoHS and Fluorescent Lamps

March 22, 2022
Phase-out of fluorescent lamps earlier than expected

The end of fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent lamps comes earlier than originally planned by the Single Lighting Regulation (2019/2020/EU) due to the foreseen update of the RoHS directive (Directive on the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment). Lamps for general lighting are affected, but there are still exemptions for special applications.

The RoHS Directive stipulates that potentially hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment are restricted. This includes mercury, which can be found in discharge lamps. Feilo Sylvania’s product range is also affected. Therefore, these fluorescent lamps can only be brought onto the market until the following dates:

Plan the switch now
The operation of many companies is particularly affected by the phasing out of fluorescent lamps. In addition, high energy prices are now likely to accelerate a switch to efficient LED lighting. With its Smart Services, Sylvania offers a wide range of services to facilitate modernization. These range from inventory audits and lighting design to commissioning and maintenance. In addition, the company offers attractive financing models so that no capital commitment is required and often the investment is quickly amortized through the energy savings.

Commitment to the traditional location of Erlangen
As a traditional location for the production of fluorescent tubes, Erlangen is not in danger despite the new RoHS. Sylvania is making a clear commitment to its production site in Germany and has already responded to the impending changes at an early stage. Since sustainability and energy efficiency are important points of the company’s philosophy, the focus of production has now been largely placed on LED moisture-proof fixtures, LED swimming pool lamps and Helios.

Erlangen has started production of Helios, an entirely new gas-cooled linear LED light source. The Helios lamp construction consists of filament LED’s sealed into a vacuum-tight glass envelope. This unique approach means that the IP68 rated tube keeps out moisture, sulphur and other chemicals that attack LED’s, enabling Helios to maintain better lumen output and superior colour stability throughout its long life. It’s LED filament design allows Helios to offer a full 360 degree light emission – a world first for a linear LED product. Helios has a high degree of flexibility and is currently being used within the Insect Control, Horticulture, Colour comparison and Automotive industry. Due to its success, plans are already underway to implement additional production lines. The Erlangen site has a great strategic value due to its geographical location in the middle of Europe, which will be sustainably strengthened by the expansion of production.
